I recently played at a cash table at the Paris Casino in Las Vegas.  The table I sat down at was both friendly and action packed.  Lots of nice sized pots coming from loose inexperienced players on vacation.  My favorite kind of table.

As is my usual pattern at a new table, I sat and chit chatted while watching the players for betting patterns, tells and who was the most and least experienced at the table.  After an hour of passive play, I was ready to go to work and really get into the game.  I was sitting in the 5 seat where I had a pretty good view of the players and chip stacks.  One of my cardinal rules is to always be aware of how many chips all the players have and what they are willing to risk on a hand.  The player in the 10 seat was by far the best player at the table, and he would obviously be challenging in any pot I went up against him in.   He was a solid player, aggressive but not overly.  I suspected he bluffed seldom but would push back when pushed.  I heard him say a few times “I check in the dark” before the flop came.  In fact, he was saying it frequently.  I began paying closer attention to the hands he played when he checked in the dark to find out what sort of hand he would do that with.  It didn’t take me long to determine that he was playing in the dark with suited cards.  Not a bad move, but to continuously do it, wasn’t so smart.

How to turn this tell to my advantage was too easy.  One of the best ways to build the pot and my stack!  Whenever he pulled his “check in the dark” I raised him.  He always called.  Most of the time he didn’t hit his suit and I was able to push him out of the pot.  A few times he got lucky and went 4 to the flush.  But most often than not I was able to steal a few more chips than normal from this one particular player.

Though this one tell isn’t among the Top 10 Poker Tells, its one of the most telling of tells, conversation.

•  Watch the Eyes – shifting eyes often indicate a nervous or inattentive player.  He isn’t sure if his hand is good enough or he may not be paying close enough attention to the game and can often be pushed out of the hand.

•  Facial Expression – disappointment displayed on a players face is a great sign of a weak hand.  A smile might indicate a strong hand, perhaps an Ace or pocket pair.

•  Weak is Strong/Strong is Weak – the most frequently talked about tell.  One times the blind, a weak bet, means a strong hand.  The player is inviting calls.  Five times the blind, a big bet, would indicate the player does not want a call and may have a very weak hand such as a small pocket pair.

*  Anxiety – shows itself in several ways at the table.  Anxious and eager to make a bet may mean a strong hand.  Shaking or idling legs are also anxious tells, the player can’t wait to get into the hand.

* Trembling Hands – shaking and trembling hands most often than not indicate a fearful player.  An unsure player can be intimidated into giving up a hand or betting a weak hand.  Conversely, it can also indicate a BIG hand which he is very nervous about playing.

*   Glance at Chips – glancing at a chip stack can mean, I’m ready to go the distance on this hand, and do I want to risk my tournament on this hand and this amount.  The anxiety tell often accompanies this glancing at the chip stack.

*   Peeking Hole Cards on Flop – usually means they hit their hand

* Repetitive Betting Patterns – means the player has a set pattern of betting and can be read easily.  Betting the same amounts or increments indicates specific hand betting.

* Body Posture/Attitude – players often show the strength of a hand in their body posture.  Slumping or a relaxed posture indicates a weak hand, and no confidence.  Conversely, sitting in an erect alert position, indicates a hand of strength.  Bluffers often lean forward in a stance of confrontation.  Remember strong often indicates weak!

* Chip Stacking – generally speaking, loose aggressive players will have a sloppy stack of chips in front of them, while a tight conservative player well have a well organized stack.  Solid players will often keep counting to have accurate knowledge of what his stack risk is on every hand.
