Denise Brody of Castro Valley, California Wins Peppermill

Friday, November 17, 2006

Peppermill Casino in Reno put the ladies in the spotlight by hosting the LIPS tournament in the main poker room of the casino.  This lent itself to a fabulous viewing of the action and final table happenings with a spacious rail in the center of the casino.

Mike Gainy, new at the helm, but not new to poker is heading up the poker room and is a welcome return to the Reno area.  Tournament Director Dennis  did an amazing job as always!

The day started with 93 ladies sliding up to the tables.  Jeannie West, LIPS Grand Champion was in the house along with Debbie Burkehead of Poker Player Magazine and many members of the ladies poker club “Poker Chix”.

Prizes abound with several deals being made for items won…  “I’ll trade you the necklace for the visor!”…. “You got a deal!” Right around the first break, the field had gotten down to 54 players.  But the real deal was all the encouraging words being shared amongst the ladies as they returned to the tables. Something you don’t hear a lot in open events.

By the second break we were down to 22 players. Once they returned, “All in” was the name of the game.  Several ladies had accumulated pretty deep stacks and were able to parlay them to the final table.

Coming to the final table, Candida Ross-Powers was chip leader with several ladies at her heels.  The “bubble prize” was a LIPS Tour Stuffed Bear, a visor and a special pair of “Poker Specs” – specialty sunglasses made just for the poker player.

The final play was fierce and it didn’t take much time to weed down the field to the final three.  Eileen Somerday was the very low chip stack but refused to go down easily.  She pushed all in several times and kept doubling up.  However in one big push, her luck ran out and new chip leader Denise Brody sent her home in third place.

Heads up play between Candida and Denise took quite a while until one hand where Candida pushed all in and Denise looked down at King Jack and she called.  She turned the Jack giving her the upper hand when Candida’s Ace didn’t improve her hand.

Denise Brody of Castro Valley Ca, worried about the snow that had been falling all day and would prevent her from making the drive back over the mountain pass to California, won the event winning a purse of $3,340 plus a seat into the LIPS/WPT $1k buy in at Commerce Casino in February and the LIPS Grand Championship seat in July at the Orleans Casino in Vegas. She didn’t mind sticking around and taking her chances because she wanted to win and she could always stay over another night until the pass cleared. Needless to say, she made the right choice by not giving up and she was victorious.

Congratulations to Denise and all the ladies who played a great game!
