Its morning and its definitely fall in Shakopee Minnesota evidenced by all the sweatshirts and jackets being worn as the ladies walk in. It became Fall overnight
It was 85 degrees just the other day! said Mary of Minneappolis, Minnesota who drove in for the event.
Canterbury Park has arranged a lovely breakfast buffet and the ladies begin chatting amongst themselves and getting to know one another. Some are familiar faces, but many are new to Canterbury Park and this was their first event. Lucky for them, Jan Fisher and Linda Johnson were in the house to share excellent poker tournament advice. As always, they were entertaining, informative and a joy to listen to. We love coming to talk with the ladies. They are fun and they seem to really want to learn more to improve their game. Said Jan Fisher And my goal is not to be the first one out like I was the last ladies event!
The event kicked off with Tournament Directors Karie Knorberg and Eddie Gerth running the show. This is the first time we have had a buy in this high for the ladies events, so were proud of the ladies that really put themselves out there for this level of play. Said Knorberg.
The ladies were all treated to US Ladies Championship shirts, prizes and gifts throughout the event. But the focus was definitely winning the title of Minnesota State Ladies Champion.
After several hours, and many eliminations later, the final table was identified. Who was at the final table? Both Jan and Linda! Seems they really know what their talking about.
Once the shuffle up was getting ready to start, the chip leader offered a full table chop of the prize money and to play it down for the title, and seat packages. They all agreed and each woman took home $2,500 and they gave a generous gratuity for the staff that did such a fabulous job in the event.
Slowly the ladies were knocked out. By the end of the day it was down to Heather Kielpinski of Minneapolis and Cathy Katzenberger of Farmington. Heather is a very seasoned player and played an amazing heads up game. This was Cathys first tournament and she was kissing a photo of her children between hands. At one point, Heather had Cathy out-chipped by quite a lot. Then a monster hand was played. Heather had pocket aces and decided to slow play. Cathy was the Big Blind and had a 5 3 off suit. Flop gave Cathy an open ended straight draw and a back door flush draw. Heather pushed a sizable amount of chips into the pot and Cathy thought about it for a long time. She finally decided to peel one off and it was a good thing she did because the turn gave her the straight. Heather continued to push and went all in at that point. Cathy called and Heather moaned when she saw the straight. Heather was heavily crippled and in a few hands later Cathy emerged victorious taking the title of Minnesota Ladies Poker Champion and the seats to the LIPS Championship and the USLadies Poker Championship both being played in Las Vegas in 2007.
"I'm so excited and I can't stop shaking! I am so thrilled that Jan and Linda gave that seminar this morning because I listened to every tip and used it in today's tournament. I guess it really pays to listen in class!" Said Cathy after her win.
Congratulations to all the ladies for a great day of poker and also to the staff of Canterbury Park under the direction of Jerry Fully, Director of Operations who has been a front runner in supporting women in poker.
Cathy Katzenberger is a wife and mother of two small children. She learned how to play poker a year ago when her husband taught her the game. In fact, she wasnt going to play in this event but her husband had a good run at the tables the night before and gave her the $300 buy in and said You are going to play in this event!
Her best results in the past is winning in a bar tournament, but nothing of this caliber. She feels she is mainly a cash game player but after this win, she may play more tournaments.
